  • Nationalism is the belief that national interests should be placed ahead of regional concerns of interests of other countries. 
  • Up until 1818, the United States had consisted of ten free and ten slave states.
  • Economic interests challenged nationalism.
  • Sectionalism is the placing if the interests of ones own region ahead of the nation as a whole, which began to take a hold.
